North Carolina stars tattooed for TLC reality series

Next month, when J. B. Mauney and Shane Proctor return to the Built Ford Tough Series, the brothers-in-law will be sporting some new artwork.

The two were in Los Angeles earlier this week, where they were filmed getting new tattoos for a possible episode of the TLC series “L.A. Ink,” which features Kat Von D and various tattoo artists at High Voltage Tattoo and American Electric.

“When you’re shooting reality TV, it’s always a little bit different then what you think it’s going to be like,” said Proctor, who along with his wife Jessi were featured last fall in the reality show “Posse.”

“We were used to having to go back and walk into the shop three times and that kind of stuff—all the things it takes to have a good production of the show you’re on.”

Proctor, who regularly watches “L.A. Ink,” worked with legendary tattoo artist Corey Miller. According to Miller’s bio, his celebrity clients include James Hetfield (Metallica) and Jesse James. Proctor is not the first professional athlete Miller has tattooed – he previously worked on Major League Baseball’s Jason Giambi.

Craig Jack, who owns American Electric, was the artist who worked on Mauney.

“Those guys are such amazing artists,” said Proctor. “It didn’t matter what they were doing or where they were at, they were going to create a piece of art. … I’ve watched the show before and I’ve seen [Miller’s] work. That was awesome, but both the artists were great, and it really didn’t matter which one you got.”

Proctor and Mauney spent two days in Los Angeles. Mauney is currently in Lake Charles, La., to promote the Mike White Invitational.

Afterward Proctor observed, “It’s all that you read about L.A. It was different, but it was still a neat place. It was just definitely different.”
