A World Cup primer

By PBR

In response to numerous requests, we are posting the following portions of the World Cup rules to better explain the competition. We are grateful for your passion and interest. –Eds.

PRIZE MONEY will be broken down as follows: each team captain will receive $1,000. Each team member will receive $1,500. Money will count towards qualifier standings. The winning team will receive $50,000, which will be divided by $10,000 per team member. The individual rider with the highest average on six bulls – including the scores thrown away by the captains – will be named MVP of the World Cup.

RANDOM DRAW will determine which five of the 25 bulls each respective team will get in each successive round, which will be divided into five sections. Each section will have a rider from each country, and each country will have a rider go first as well as last in the sections throughout the event. However, the sixth and last section will be determined by the lowest scoring team going first and the highest scoring team going last.

In a pre-determined draw the order by round is as follows: Round 1: Brazil, Canada, Mexico, USA and Australia; In Round 2: Canada, Mexico, USA, Australia and Brazil; Round 3: Mexico, USA, Australia, Brazil and Canada; Round 4: USA, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico; Round 5: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and USA.

In all rounds, the Team Captains can reassign riders to bulls, but only within their respective teams.  Bull order within the sections can be set prior to the round based on contractor/stock handler preference, but the sections must be bucked in order, 1 thru 5.

INJURED RIDERS and those unable to compete will be replaced by rider within his team by the captain and will ride in the injured rider’s place.  Any score attained by the substituted rider will be assigned to the injured rider for scoring purposes. Once a rider has been replaced by an alternate or other rider already on the team that injured rider is out of the competition for the remainder of the event.

ONLY QUALIFIED SCORES will count toward a team’s total score, no round place points will be awarded. For the duration of the World Cup competition, after each rider score is announced, the team captain must decide whether to keep the score or discard it.  After each team has accumulated 3 scores within each round, any subsequent scores must be discarded.  Once a score is discarded, it cannot be reclaimed. Teams must compete on all five bulls drawn for each round. If a captain opts to take the first three scores prior to the remaining two contestants competing, the remaining two contestants must still get on the final two bulls. If all five bulls are not competed on, that team will forfeit all scores for that round.

TEAM RIDERS will be allowed to compete on the same bull multiple times if deemed necessary by the Team Captains.

TIE BREAKER. In the event that 2 or more teams are tied for position based on total accumulated scores the team with the highest back judge scores will be awarded the higher position. If the teams are still tied by the back judge scores, the team position, for purposes of bucking order, will be determined by a coin toss.

If 2 or more teams are tied for position in the final accumulated scores, the team with the highest total back judge scores will be the winner.  If the teams are still tied by the back judge scores, the tied teams will split the prize money equally.

PAYOUTS of PBR World Cup prize money will be paid by PBR and winnings will count for qualifier standings towards the 2009 PBR World Finals.
