“I’ve always wanted to get on that bull (Carrillo Cartel),” Mauney said from the winner’s circle. “I figured I could win on him. He’s a hard bull to ride—big and strong, but it all worked out in the end.”
Mauney rode the bull, Recoil, owned by D&H Cattle Company, for 86 points and a second place finish in round one. In round two, the North Carolina man took on Murphy Ranch and Rodeo’s bull, Full Throttle, for 87.75 points. He entered the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in first place with a total of 173.75 points, giving him the first pick in the PBR Bull Draft. Mauney chose to ride the bull, Carrillo Cartel of 4C’s Bucking Bulls/James Sills, but was awarded a re-ride after being fouled on the gate. Mauney chose to re-try the tough animal athlete and ended up taming Carrillo Cartel for 89 points, locking up the Bud Light Invitational event title—his third BFTS win of the 2009 season.
“The bull hung his horn on the gate and came out backwards, giving me an option for a re-ride,” Mauney said. “I told him to run him back in there because he’s a really good bull.”
Team U.S. Border Patrol riders fared extremely well in San Antonio, placing second and third overall. L.J. Jenkins (Texico, N.M.) took second place after riding all three of his bulls for 256.75 points, adding a check for $14,752 to his bank account, while “Titanium Tough” Luke Snyder (Raymore, Mo.) finished in third place with a total of 254.5 points on three bulls and a check for $9,342. Taking fourth place was fan favorite Cord McCoy (Tupelo, Okla.) who finished the weekend with 177.5 points on two bulls and collected a check for $8,894. Rounding out fifth place was Caleb Sanderson (Kissimmee, Fla.) who covered two of three bulls for 174.75 points, adding $6,960 to his 2009 earnings.
San Antonio was stop no. 7 of 9 on the 2009 PBR Bull Team Competition. Fourteen teams have been formed, each competing for their share of a total tour purse of over $500,000 throughout the 2009 season. The team, Team King - Herrington, took first place and the $10,000 check after totaling 132.25 points, beating out second place team, Team Creek County Connection, who ended the event with 131.25 points and a second place check worth $5,000.
The race for PBR’s million dollar world title takes the top 40 bull riders in the world to Music City for stop no. 25 on the prestigious BFTS tour.
