Make no bones about it. Bones is the top bull in the world.
When Tom Teague’s prized bull bucked off newly minted PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi in 4 seconds, he earned the title every bull man craves:
PBR World Champion Bull.
Bones was the only bovine athlete to buck off Marchi in the eight-round Built Ford Tough Series World Finals. Teague gets more than a shot of pride. He also won $20,000 and a Big Tex stock trailer.
The unridden Bones earned 47.25 points (out of 50) Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center to slide past Julio and Cindy Moreno’s Troubadour by a quarter-point. Bones earned 140.75 points in the three-round, five-bull competition that concluded in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round (short-go).
Troubadour, the 2007 ABBI Bucking Bull Classic Champion, also scored 47.25 points Sunday when he launched two-time World Champion Chris Shivers in 5 seconds. Bones and Troubadour also posted the same score (46.5) in round four Thursday.
So where did Bones win it? You have to go back to Round 2 on Nov. 1. But that was no easy feat.
Bones dropped two-time World Champ Justin McBride and was awarded 47 points. Troubadour contributed 46.75 points to J.B. Mauney’s round-winning 93.5-pointer.
All In (Naccarato Bucking Bulls) placed third in the World Champion Bull race with 140 points. Spit Fire (C&G Rodeo Livestock) was fourth (137.5) and Copperhead Slinger (Chad Berger & Clay Struve) placed fifth (136.75).
“I thought it came as close as it can get between those top four bulls,” PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert said. “Even Copperhead Slinger was good, but Spit Fire, Troubadour and All In were amazing. Bones was just a little better than they were.
“And he had to prove it with the top bull rider in the world on him.”
By recording the highest bull scores at the Finals, Bones and Troubadour shared the Mikel Moreno Bull of the PBR World Finals award. The honor, which Troubadour also shared last year, is named after the Moreno’s late son, Mikel.
