2006 PBR Rookie of the Year Earns Second Consecutive Built Ford Tough Series Title

By PBR

For the second consecutive weekend Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS) action was dominated by 2006 Professional Bull Riders’ (PBR) Rookie of the Year J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.). Mauney earned the first tour title of his career last weekend in Madison Square Garden. He left stop number two in Worcester, Mass. $37,079 richer and has accumulated $65,827 in tour earnings during the past two weeks. The DCU Center hosted three explosive performances, Jan. 12-14 in what marks the 10 year anniversary of the PBR’s Worcester Classic.

The PBR airs regularly on VERSUS. Please visit http://www.pbrnow.com/media/tv/ for the complete broadcast schedule.

Mauney credits his win streak to a solid but simple strategy, “I’m just having fun. I get on practice bulls during the week to stay sharp and I’m keeping my head on straight. Physically I’ve never felt better.”

2005 PBR World Champion, Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) was holding down the number one spot when Built Ford Tough Championship round action commenced. McBride conquered Bad Company Rodeo’s Walk This Way for 90.75 championship points to win round one. He is the only man to have successfully challenged Walk This Way, a bull that has been ridden just twice in 20 tour attempts since 2004, both times by McBride. Frontier, Teague, and Steiner’s Just A Dream turfed McBride in the finals and he ultimately finished sixth overall.

It was then Mauney who overtook the lead when he became the first to ride all four of his bulls. Mauney posted 87.75 points on Page, Buck, and Watt’s Sports Machine in the championship round for a total on four bulls with 341.75 points.

Said Mauney, “He’s a bull that I’ve seen a lot and when I was looking at the short round draw sheet, Sports Machine is the one that I thought to myself I would sure like to have. I just had to keep my hand shut and do my job.”

In order to win the title, 2006 PBR reserve world champ Guilherme Marchi (Leme, SP, BZ) had no choice but to ride Page and Teague Bucking Bulls’ Sunshine. Maintaining his trademark consistency, Marchi achieved 88.5 points but was still 1.5 points shy of passing Mauney’s lead.

Said Mauney, “He’s a bull that I’ve seen a lot and when I was looking at the short round draw sheet, Sports Machine is the one that I thought to myself I would sure like to have. I just had to keep my hand shut and do my job.”

Brian Canter (Randleman, N.C.) posted 89.75 round winning points aboard Williams, Rothe, and Lang’s Superman to steal the spotlight during the Worcester Classic finals. Canter finished the night in fourth place.

Mauney’s second tour title places him in the driver’s seat for a world title with 1,861.5 series points. Mauney finished 2006 ranked 25th in the PBR World Standings. Mike Lee (Decatur, Texas) is hot on his heels in second with 1,584.5 points.

BEHIND THE CHUTES:

Enterprise Rent-A-Car's "Ride with the Best" Match-up Bonus: J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.), by way of his event win in New York City, was eligible for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car "Ride with the Best" bonus money in Worcester. On Saturday, Mauney was successful in his attempt against Berger Bucking Bulls’ Black Jacket, thus claiming the $5,000. On Sunday, Mauney was successful against Davis/Wilson/Happy-H Bucking Bulls’ George’s Pride and was again awarded the $5,000.

J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) by way of his event win in Worcester, is eligible at the Fresno BFTS event next weekend for the chance to claim the Enterprise Rent-A-Car "Ride with the Best" Match-up Bonus. If the rider covers his eligible bulls during the event, he will receive a $5,000 cash bonus for each successful ride. But, if the bulls launch the cowboy before he can make a qualified ride, the $5,000 bonus will go to that bull's stock contractor instead.

Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus: Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) led the event going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round but did not ultimately earn the overall event title. Consequently, he did not claim the $25,000 Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus. The bonus in Fresno will be $30,000. When the Built Ford Tough Moment of Truth Bonus is claimed the purse returns to $5,000.

Ford Super Duty Challenge: As the event winner, J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) is qualified for a chance to compete at the World Finals, against all other 2007 Built Ford Tough Series event winners, for $40,000 towards a new 2007 Ford Super Duty Truck. The Ford Super Duty Challenge contestant who finishes the highest in the event aggregate during the 2007 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals will win the Ford Super Duty Challenge.

Salem National Lease Bull of the Event: Frontier & Teague Bucking Bulls’ Big Bucks took top bull honors of the event, and as a part of Salem National Lease's exciting bonus program the bull earned $1,250. The program awards $1,250 to the top bull of the event as determined by the PBR judges.

Cabela's World's Foremost Ride: Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) achieved the highest marked ride of the Worcester Classic when he topped Bad Company Rodeo’s Walk This Way in round one. In so doing he earned $1,000. Rocky McDonald (Col. Juarez, Mexico) is in the lead for the Cabela’s World’s Foremost Ride bonus with a 92 point effort on Page & Teague Bucking Bulls’ Sunshine in New York City.

The rider who achieves the highest score at each BFTS regular season event during the 2007 BFTS regular season excluding the PBR World Finals receives a bonus of $1,000 for the event. The PBR athlete who achieves the highest marked qualifying ride during the entire 2007 BFTS regular season, excluding the World Finals event will receive $25,000, while second and third place finishers will be awarded $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.
