2006 National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Rodeo Hall of Fame Honors Ty Murray

PBR President to be inducted on October 22

By PBR

The President of the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR), Ty Murray, has been honored among the 2006 National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees. Four living and four deceased honorees will be recognized during the induction ceremony which takes place on Sunday, Oct. 22. The distinction is annually determined by the Board of Directors of the Rodeo Historical Society. Recipients of the Tad Lucas and Ben Johnson Memorial Awards also will be recognized.

Murray (Stephenville, Texas) was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2000 and automatically qualified for induction into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Rodeo Hall of Fame by virtue of being a PRCA world champion all-around cowboy.
At age 23 Murray became the youngest millionaire in rodeo history. He won the first of his record seven all-around titles in 1989 and won six straight titles from 1989-94. His seventh all-around crown came in 1998, and he also won two bull riding world titles in 1993 and 1998.

In 1992, Murray was among the founding members of a fledgling bull riding organization that is now well known around the world as the PBR. He earned the 1999 PBR World Finals event title and finished as the reserve PBR World Champion for three years.  In July 2004 he became the president of the PBR. He serves double duty as a regular commentator on VERSUS, as well as on network PBR telecasts appearing on FOX and NBC.

Murray joins living inductees for 2006 which include Mel Hyland (Dutchess, Alberta, Canada), Alvin Nelson (Grassy Butte, N.D.), Vernon "Dude" Smith (Burkburnett, Texas), and Dan Taylor (Doole, Texas). Deceased inductees are George Elliott (1900-1981), Marie "Ma" Gibson (1894-1933), Carl Dossey (1918-1955), and Chris LeDoux (1948-2005).

PBR stock contractor hall of famer Cotton Rosser will be honored with the Ben Johnson Memorial Award. Rosser, who has run the Flying U Rodeo Company for 50 years, was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1995.

About the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum:

Through its three Halls of Fame, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum honors and memorializes the men and women who have through their exemplary lives, careers, and achievements embodied and perpetuated the heritage of the American West.
