PBR Mourns the Passing of Mikel Moreno

PBR Mourns the Passing of Mikel Moreno

By PBR

The Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) mourns and regretfully announces the passing of Mikel Moreno, 18, son of Julio and Cindy Moreno and grandson of Hall of Fame stock contractor Cotton Rosser. Originally diagnosed in early 2003, Mikel had battled acute lymphocytic leukemia for several years. His cancer appeared to be in remission, but returned in early 2004.

An accomplished athlete, Mikel was a senior in high school and earned his high school diploma, which was awarded during a special ceremony. Mikel had already become an accomplished stock contractor and helped with the nationally acclaimed Flying U Rodeo Company breeding program. Julio stated that he will continue to raise and buck the calves from Mikel's breeding program in his son's honor.

Ty Murray, President of the PBR, stated, "I knew Mikel basically since he was born. He was always working with Cindy in the office when she secretaried rodeos across the country. Even though Mikel lived too short of life, he lived a very rich life because he knew that he was loved so much by his family. Some people live to be 80 years old without knowing that. Everything else that Cindy and Julio did in their lives came second to Mikel."

Murray's girlfriend and renowned singer and songwriter, Jewel, will be dedicating the kickoff concert of her upcoming tour to Mikel Moreno. The tour kicks off on May 23 in Clearwater, Fla.

Said PBR Vice President Cody Lambert, "Mikel was a brave kid and fought this thing as long as he could. Every time he'd win one battle, he'd be confronted with something new to deal with. Mikel fought so hard that he managed to graduate from high school and all his teachers, coaches, and friends thought so much of him that they retired his football jersey even though he was just able to play for two years because of this disease. He made the varsity team at the end of his freshman year and then he continued to play while he was sick as a sophomore, that's how hard he tried."

Mikel is survived by his parents, Julio and Cindy Moreno of
Marysville, Calif.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 24 at 2 p.m. at the Wheatland High School Football Field in Wheatland, Calif.  A memorial fund has been set up in Mikel's honor at:

Mikel Jay Moreno Memorial Fund

Please keep the Moreno family in your thoughts and prayers.
