McBride Wins the Million!

By PBR

Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) claimed the undisputed title of Built Ford Tough World Champion and million dollar bonus in front of hundreds of millions of television viewers across the world, in addition to the capacity crowd that was fortunate enough to watch the drama of the Professional Bull Riders' (PBR) Built Ford Tough World Finals unfold live. In the face of extreme pressure McBride conquered the mental and physical challenges before him, not to mention the greatest assembly of bucking bulls on the planet, on his way to capturing the coveted title of Built Ford Tough World Champion. McBride managed to hold off the great Brazilian champion Guilherme Marchi (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who launched a powerful offensive and emerged as the Built Ford Tough World Finals event champion. McBride countered the assault by clinging to his final round draw, Paradise Farms Rodeo Genetics' Camo for 75 points ending the 2005 season with 13,415.25 BFTS points. McBride eclipsed the previous PBR season earnings record with $1,479,231 in PBR bucks. The $3.2 million Built Ford Tough World Finals presented by Wrangler spanned two consecutive weekends and eight go rounds of explosive bull riding action, October 28'30 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and November 3-6, at the Thomas & Mack Center. A World Finals Highlights Show will air on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m. EST on NBC. Visit http://www.pbrnow.com/media/tv/ to view the current broadcast schedule and verify times and dates.

Of his monumental accomplishment McBride stated, "I had my first realistic shot to win the title in 2001 but everything that I have gone through since then makes this one more special. I put more pressure on myself than anyone in the media ever could. To finally be the PBR World Champion is a huge relief for me and the injuries and everything else that led up to tonight have helped me handle this." Of the final round match up against Camo, McBride added, "Bull riding went out the window when I nodded my head because that ride was about being a cowboy."

With staunch determination, McBride fought to stay ahead of both Marchi and Jody Newberry(Ada, Okla.) as the event progressed. Among the most riveting title bouts in PBR history, the race is more compelling considering the bitter adversity that McBride has overcome during his previous two seasons. McBride has entered the past two World Finals events in contention for the title only to have his goals undermined by multiple injuries. McBride, Newberry, and Marchi entered Sunday's action ranked number one, two, and four respectively in the World Finals event aggregate. A 1,560.5 point deficit loomed before Marchi as round seven got underway, while Newberry was 2,593 points behind. The remaining number of Built Ford Tough Series points available on Sunday was 3,500 and each contender's million dollar hopes hinged upon each and every point. Newberry bucked off Page and Teague Bucking Bulls' Night Life in round seven, dropping from the average race while McBride and Marchi went into the final round in a virtual stalemate after covering their bulls for 86 and 89.75 points respectively in round seven. McBride qualified for the championship round in the top spot and held his ground with an unbelievable final round effort worth 75 points for a total on six bulls of 517.75 points and second in the aggregate.

In response to the outcome of the race and the World Finals event championship Marchi said, "The World Finals title is of second most importance to the cowboys and I am happy for the win. I came to the finals really focused and strong. I came here physically, mentally, and psychologically prepared, but Justin McBride had to do poorly and when he performed so well I decided to ride bull for bull and just wait on the outcome." Marchi plans to rest for several weeks, regain his focus, and pursue the title in 2006.

Brian Herman (Victoria, Texas) captured the $20,000 seventh go round win with 91 points aboard Paleface, owned by Scotty Lovelace, while Marchi dominated the intense final round for the top 15 qualified contestants with 88.75 points aboard Roy Carter Bucking Bulls' Kidd Rock.

Berger, Taupin and Teague's immortal three time PBR World Champion Bull Little Yellow Jacket made the final competitive performance of his celebrated career along with Herrington Cattle Company's celebrated fan favorite Blueberry Wine. The top bull honors of the Built Ford Tough World Finals, as determined by the event judges, were awarded to: 1) Taylor Made Bucking Bulls' Pandora's Box, $12,500; 2) Herrington Cattle Company's Blueberry Wine, $7,500; 3) Bad Company Rodeo's Walk This Way, $5,000.
