The competition format features athletes engaging in a 70-second freestyle bullfighting display. Bullfighters are evaluated based upon the aptitude they display in controlling and maneuvering a 2,000-pound opponent. Precision in jumping the bull, contact with the bull, and handling of the barrel are additional criteria used in critiquing each contestant's performance. The Dickies DuraBullfighters are a team of athletes who put forth the ultimate effort each night in order to protect the top 45 bull riders at every tour stop on the 31-city Built Ford Tough Series. The Dickies DuraBullfighter team consists of Joe Baumgartner, Dennis Johnson, Rob Smets, Greg Crabtree, and Frank Newsom. While professional bullfighters distract the bull, and when necessary "take the hit" upon the conclusion of a successful eight-second ride or after a buck off, Dickies National Championship Bullfighting is an extension of protection bullfighting and provides a showcase for the amazing athleticism of these arena warriors.
