By PBR

The Tacoma Classic, fourteenth stop on the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) presented by Wrangler, concluded with a weekend of electrifying performances and spectacular scores on the way to naming Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) as its champion. McBride delivered his fourth BFTS season win of 2004 bringing him one step closer in his pursuit of the PBR world championship title. As has been the case through the course of the season McBride, Adriano Moraes (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Mike Lee (Alvord, Texas) set a sizzling pace for the rest of the field qualifying for the championship round in the first, third, and fourth positions respectively. As the last gunner during the finals, McBride faced the ominous task of outperforming Lee and Moraes who were winning first and second with one man left to challenge them.

McBride trounced the competition in a decisive nine-point victory earning the Tacoma Classic title and $40,523 in PBR cash. McBride's spectacular 89-point score during the first go-round aboard Corey and Horst Rodeo Company's Ace of Hearts combined with his 86.5 point second go-round performance on Julio Moreno's Tiger Shark to put him in command as he advanced to the third and final round. While Owen Washburn (Lordsburg, N.M.) stole the show during the Built Ford Tough Championship Round with an explosive 92.5 point trip aboard the legendary bull Cash, owned by Don Kish Bucking Bulls, McBride's 90.5 score aboard McNasty, another Don Kish bull, sealed the deal.

While McBride had not previously faced Kish's McNasty, he had the inside track on the bull after watching close friends Ross Coleman (Redmond, Ore.) and J.W. Hart (Marietta, Okla.) face the bull during 2003. McNasty was last ridden by Luke Snyder for 90 points during the 2003 PBR World Finals. "He takes a long jump when he leaves the chute before he turns back and if you can make it to where he starts to spin he's real good to ride," said McBride.

When comparing this season to past years the always understated McBride explained, "I'm maintaining a good riding percentage and at just over half way through the season I've won four events which is a good feeling. I don't pay a lot of attention to the numbers but overall it's been a pretty good year so far."

With a lock on the top two spots in BFTS point standings Moraes and McBride are separated by a mere 1,189 points. Lee holds down the number three position, trailing McBride by 200.5 points and also owns one of the highest riding percentages on tour of 65.6%, second only to Moraes' astounding 83.9%.

While the 2004 season had been a lackluster one for 2002 PBR world champion Ednei Caminhas (Sao Paulo, Brazil), he changed all that on Friday night in Tacoma. Not only did Caminhas secure top honors in the first go-round, he followed up a stellar 90-point performance aboard Ed Hill Bucking Bulls' Smokin Smurf with an amazing display of determination aboard Simpson and Thornton Bucking Bulls' Red Alert in the coveted Mossy Oak Shoot Out. Unclaimed during 2004 until Tacoma, the Mossy Oak Shoot Out cash reward had escalated to a season high of $65,000.

As selected by the event judges, the top bull honors were awarded to Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls' Werewolf Snuff who tossed Ednei Caminhas during final go-round action. Second place went to Don Kish Bucking Bulls' Showtime.

PBR commentary during OLN's broadcast of the Tacoma Classic is brought to fans by the capable team of Leah Garcia, Brett Haber, Tuff Hedeman, and Justin McKee. Leah Garcia handles the sideline interviews. Since 1998 Garcia has covered professional mountain bike racing, cycling, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, rodeo, and now bull riding. Her work has been seen on NBC, ESPN, ESPN2, TNN, The Oxygen Network, Syndicated TV, and OLN. Nine-time Emmy award winner Brett Haber, has been a commentator for OLN since March of 2003 and became the play-by-play voice of the PBR in October of that same year. Huber's witty writing style and on-air approach have made him one of the most innovative sportscasters in the country. Tuff Hedeman needs no introduction in bull riding circles. The current PBR President and four-time world champion bull rider brings to the broadcast his vast knowledge of bull riding, as well as tremendous experience behind the microphone as a guest commentator on both OLN and NBC. Justin McKee formerly served as a live event announcer at nearly every tour event virtually since the PBR's inception and has consequently been dubbed "the voice of the PBR."

The PBR is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado and has over 600 athletes competing in more than 100 PBR sanctioned competitions. More than one million spectators attend PBR events each year. In addition to the weekly shows on OLN (Outdoor Life Network) in the United States and Canada, the PBR features network telecasts on NBC. This unprecedented television coverage has made bull riding one of the fastest growing spectator sports in America and around-the-world.
