Week 10 PBR Camping World Team Series power rankings

TOP DOG ALERT: Kansas City atop the pack ahead of PBR Teams: Cowboy Days.

By James Youness

PUEBLO, Colo. — A new week. A new top dawg in the 5-on-5 landscape.

With the No. 1 Carolina Cowboys pacing the power ranking pack for a majority of the 2024 PBR Camping World Team Series season, fans have come to understand just how dominant a squad that General Manager Austin Dillon has assembled.

They’ve done their part in serving as the league’s top dawgs, and technically continue to lead the circuit courtesy of their productive 15-4-1 start to the season.

But with the No. 2 Kansas City Outlaws exiting 11 of their past 13 games in the win column, the Cowboys are no longer in pole position of the Week 10 measuring tables.

Sandro Batista is leading the MVP race. Cassio Dias and Koltin Hevalow are each ranked within the Top 7 of said individual aggregate score action. It’s a good time to be rocking orange and black.

When the 2024 World Champion in Dias is walking off games in dramatic fashion, you know the team is keeping their foot on the gas as they continue to chase down Carolina. But when it comes to hot streaks and momentum, it’s clear that Kansas City is in the frontrunner right now.

If the Outlaws and Cowboys are sitting together in the first tier of teams, the Florida Freedom, Texas Rattlers and Austin Gamblers represent the league’s second tier. The Freedom, sitting at 11-9, could be argued into their own second tier, as they are the lone squad of the three above the .500 mark right now. At the same time, both the Gamblers and Rattlers are just one game below the even-season mark, something they’ll look to change this weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Freedom should feel pretty good about their postseason odds as things sit currently, but that can change quicker than we think. The Rattlers and Gamblers are merely one game ahead of the three units sitting with matching 9-12 records in the Nashville Stampede, Missouri Thunder and New York Mavericks.

So, if they want to stay in this second tier and ahead of the curve, they need to show up and show out when the tour invades Greensboro Coliseum Sept. 20-22.

The third and final tier remains the largest of the pack, as the Stampede, Thunder, Mavericks, Oklahoma Wildcatters and Arizona Ridge Riders are all plenty talented but find themselves anywhere from 1 to 2.5 games back of the second tier of teams. Meaning they are very much still in this ever-shifting postseason equation ahead of the 2024 PBR Teams Championship.

Who is willing to grit it out over these final three regular season showdowns and punch their ticket to T-Mobile Center?

We could begin seeing teams clinch said territory during the Cowboy’s electric homestand, so be sure to tune into this weekend’s broadcast and get ready for one hell of a race!

With the 10th of 12 regular season showdowns quickly approaching, the epic 5-on-5 action continues this weekend inside Honda Center in Anaheim, California, with all of this summer’s action set to air on Merit Street and the Merit+ App, continuing Friday night at 7 p.m. PT.

Fans can stay tuned to the league’s official 2024 PBR Camping World Teams Series standings here throughout the action-packed season and are encouraged to share their own rankings with us on @PBR social media channels!

No. 1: Kanas City Outlaws (Week 9 Rank: No. 2)
The time has come and the Carolina Cowboys’ run atop the PBR Camping World Team Series has come to an end. For now, at least, as we’ve got the red-hot Kansas City Outlaws in the driver’s seat heading into Week 10. Winning 11 of their last 13 games, there’s no argument or factoid that can beat the orange and black’s spicy run lately. Even if Carolina’s starting five has been the most dominant team top to bottom, the Outlaws have officially tied the blue and white contingent with a league-leading 15 victories. So, with the amount of momentum they’ve assembled with just three regular season events remaining, they’ve earned the rights to the No. 1 rank. Plus, they went 2-0 in Anaheim, California, while Carolina only managed a 1-1 record. Not to mention they lead Carolina by nearly 400 combined aggregate score at this point. And when you consider the Outlaws have riders occupying three of the Top 7 spots in the MVP race, including No. 1 Sandro Batista, No. 5 Cassio Dias and No. 7 Koltin Hevalow, they get the edge in the tie-breaker this time around. Both squads will have a chance to officially clinch their playoff spots inside T-Mobile Arena this weekend, so we know the Outlaws will look to show up and seal the deal in Week 10.

No. 2: Carolina Cowboys (Week 9 Rank: No. 1)
As mentioned, the Cowboys haven’t dropped too many contests results thus far in 2024. But after suffering an opening night loss to the expansion club Oklahoma Wildcatters, they’re just 1-1-1 against the squad, mathematically meaning they’ve struggled to defeat J.B. Mauney’s team more than any of their other nine league opponents. But that’s a long way in the past at this point, as the Cowboys rebounded on the weekend by defeating the New York Mavericks 172.75-90 Sunday afternoon as Derek Kolbaba and Cooper Davis continued their productive campaigns via encouraging conversions.

The Cowboys were previously the only other team this season (other than Kansas City) to roster three different riders ranked in the Top 10 of the MVP race. While Daylon Swearingen has fallen to the No. 13 spot, Kolbaba’s momentum has skyrocketed him into similar company, now No. 15 overall, making the Cowboys the only squad with four riders currently in the Top 15. They’ve got all of the tools necessary to make a run at the 2024 PBR Teams Championship, something they’ll look to do after potentially clinching their spot this weekend during their homestand event in Greensboro, North Carolina.

No. 3: Florida Freedom (Week 9 Rank: No. 5)
Now is a damn good time to be finding your groove as a collective unit – exactly what the Florida Freedom have been up to the past month or so, now victorious in seven of their last nine matchups as they continue to ascend the league standings. Bringing a healthy 11-9 record into this weekend’s PBR Teams: Cowboy Days showdown out east, they are one of three teams currently operating above the .500 mark. And when the other two teams are as loaded as they are, this is a GREAT sign for Head Coach Paulo Crimber and company.

Of course, John Crimber, who’s just 16.5 points behind Sandro Batista in the MVP race, has been firing on all cylinders for most of his rookie 5-on-5 campaign. But with Elizmar Jeremias, Joao Lucas Campos and Alex Cerqueira each hearing the buzzer at least once over the weekend as they handed losses to both the Texas Rattlers and Missouri Thunder, they’ve been enjoying some additional soaring power beneath their wings. If Crimber’s squad mates can continue to surround him with qualified rides and welcome conversions, they will have every shot out there to make some noise inside T-Mobile Center next month. For now, they’ll look to keep the ship sailing straight, as they’ll only need a few more wins here to secure they’re postseason spot the way the bottom half of the standings have been playing out.

No. 4 Texas Rattlers (Week 9 Rank: No. 3)
The Texas Rattlers have had our attention lately, as they’ve been one of the hottest teams in the league coming into Anaheim. Posting a third-consecutive 4-for-5 effort when they stormed into Honda Center Friday night, Head Coach Cody Lambert and company were on top of the world as their saucy streak continued.

RELATED: Texas Rattlers erupt in Anaheim for third consecutive 4-for-5 performance

However, the successful stretch finally came to an end as the Rattlers dropped their final two showdowns of the weekend to the aforementioned Florida Freedom and No. 2 Kansas City Outlaws. Not much they can do about drawing quality competition, but it stings a bit more when those are both squads sitting ahead of them in the standings while knowing they’ve been very capable of competing against said talent. The no-score effort against Florida kind of speaks for itself, so it was good to see Texas string a few rides together on Sunday, albeit in a 345.75-263.75 loss to the Outlaws. The most dramatic part of their current 10-11 slate? It’s the identical record of their in-state rival Austin Gamblers, who remain in the Top 5 of the power rankings.

No. 5: Austin Gamblers (Week 9 Rank: No. 4)
They may have posted another odd 1-2 record inside Honda Center, but they’ve still got their big shots doing their thing. And for that reason, they’ll remain locked into the Top 5 or so, barring some sort of incremental fall-off in these last few events. Plus, as long as Jose Vitor Leme is around and competing for a third-straight PBR Teams MVP means they’ll be plenty competitive come the postseason. If they make it there, that is!3

It would be a bit odd without the green and black contingent inside T-Mobile Center. But that’s part of the fun the 10-team league has presented in year three. You’ve got to earn it this time around. Picking up a sincere, yet tight, win over the Arizona Ridge Riders Friday, the Gamblers stumbled from there on out, dropping decisions to the Nashville Stampede and Missouri Thunder en route to finishing the weekend on a 3-for-10 stretch (albeit 6-for-15 on the weekend). It would be easy to say the squad is missing standout Dalton Kasel as he heals up, but the Muleshoe, Texas, native is just 6-for-15 on the season, so that’s not the missing puzzle piece specifically. Regardless of the imperfect season, they’re easily still within reach of clinching a playoff spot if they can make the most out of the final three regular season events.

No. 6: Nashville Stampede (Week 9 Rank: No. 10)
Ranking this third tier of bottom-5 teams has been hard all season but it’s even more difficult to pick and prod between this group ahead of Week 10. So, with a bit of recency bias in there, we’ll give the nod to the Stampede in the No. 6 spot this weekend after turning in an impressive 2-0 showcase in Anaheim en route to ridding their dreadful seven-game losing streak.

RELATED: Nashville Stampede dominate Austin Gamblers in Anaheim to snap seven-game losing streak

Getting Friday night off for some additional bye game rest, they returned to Honda Center Saturday looking for trouble, and found it, quickly upsetting the Gamblers 256.5-86.5 as Silvano Alves, Cody Jesus and Kaiden Loud teamed up for one of their biggest wins of the season. Ridding the streak, sure, but besting a respectable squad from Austin in convincing fashion are both good signs for the Stampede. Just like their Sunday afternoon result, when they knocked off the Wildcatters by one ride score, 166.25-87. Alves doubled down, which always helps, but newcomer Anderson de Oliveira produced a game-deciding 84.25-point dance which ultimately served as the team’s biggest ride of the weekend. They aren’t perfect. They aren’t sexy by any means. But they are the 2022 PBR Teams Champions coached by Justin McBride. So, we aren’t counting out the blue and yellow squad quite yet, especially after seeing them vault up to the No. 6 spot in the league standings.

No. 7: New York Mavericks (Week 9 Rank: No. 6)
Despite going 1-2 in Anaheim, the Mavericks are rocking the No. 6 spot in this week’s power rankings because they’re straight up fun to watch. They don’t bring four and five-ride efforts too often, but it’s the way they climb out of close contests with victories that proves a bit of resilience. Picking up a tight 160.75-150.25 win over the Oklahoma Wildcatters on Saturday, the win was sandwiched between a pair of losses, however, dropping games to the Texas Rattlers and league-leading Carolina Cowboys. Regardless of the results, they have to be feeling good about Leonardo Machado after seeing the talent post a rank 90.

But with Machado (No. 35) and Mauricio Moreira (No. 22) the only two Mavericks riders in the Top 40 of the MVP race, they’ll need to see some of their regulars step up here over the course of the tour’s final three events. With games against the Florida Freedom and Austin Gamblers quickly approaching this weekend in North Carolina, they’ll need to knock off two teams above them in the league standings if they wish to further their push for the postseason. Overall, this is one of the hardest teams on the circuit to diagnose and have been for most of the season. But that wild card aspect is exactly what teams are fearing ahead of the “win or go home” playoff gauntlet.

No. 8: Missouri Thunder (Week 9 Rank: No. 7)
Paulo Eduardo Rossetto
has been the team’s ride leader for most of the season, so it’s a very good sign for Head Coach Ross Coleman and company to see the likes of Boudreaux Campbell, Andrew Alvidrez, Casey Roberts and friends making the 8 around him. Dawson Gleaves finding some success in the Shootout Round doesn’t hurt things, either!

Landing a 1-1 record on the weekend, the Thunder are starting to evolve into a new group with the 2024 PBR Teams Championship right around the corner. Which could be very scary for the league’s other nine teams knowing what they were able to achieve in 2023 in stunning, Cinderella fashion. But the Thunder need to keep their eyes on the true prize: their final few opportunities to get the job done in the regular season rather than daring to experiment with the league’s new postseason format. Ending the weekend with a HUGE 266-168 final over the Austin Gamblers, they couldn’t have picked a better way to close out the weekend than with a dramatic Shootout Round session. They may have dropped their first showdown to the Florida Freedom, but it was still good to see Missouri put up two rides on the board. They’re bringing a 9-12 record into Week 10, the same as both the Nashville Stampede and New York Mavericks – therefore they couldn’t be much thicker in the middle of the playoff race right now. Expect big things from Missouri in North Carolina this weekend as they look to capitalize on some late-season momentum.

No. 9: Oklahoma Wildcatters (Week 9 Rank: No. 8)
If there’s ever been a team to see a team piece together their highest combined aggregate score in a game all season long, Week 9 sure isn’t a bad time to break out! Racking up a stunning 336-87.25 win over the Carolina Cowboys to open their weekend in California, J.B. Mauney’s team experienced another high as they celebrated and smiled their way into night two.

The team’s newly acquired cowboy in Tate Pollmeier proved his old squad wrong, eventually posting a qualified ride while defeating Carolina before following it up with a gritty conversion in the Shootout Round. Unfortunately, Oklahoma went on to drop their final two contests of the weekend, most importantly to a pair of units who find themselves fighting for their lives near the bottom half of the standings, just like the Wildcatters. The 10.5-point loss to the Mavericks surely hurts a bit being the slight deficit, but the squad’s one-ride loss to the Stampede Sunday, 166.25-87 couldn’t have been received much better. If they want to see postseason dirt during their inaugural season, they’d be wise to show up in a big way this weekend in Greensboro.

No. 10: Arizona Ridge Riders (Week 9 Rank: No. 9)
Seeing the Arizona Ridge Riders make some noise in Week 8 provided some encouraging implications that the black and white squad was heading in the right direction. And while they ended up losing both of their games in Anaheim, they went 5-for-10 as a group overall, which included two and three-ride outcomes. They watched on as Guilherme Valleiras, Leme and Ramon de Lima teamed up to send them home with an opening night loss, which is what it is. The real heart-breaker came on Sunday when they managed their three conversions but, unfortunately for Arizona, it came during a contest against the red-hot Outlaws, who ended the contest with a 4-for-5 slate. Veteran Eduardo Aparecido has been doing all he can in attempting to dig his squad out of the basement. Ranked No. 9 in the MVP standings and sporting a team-best 12-for-21 record, he’s been looking good. Hell, Keyshawn Whitehorse broke out of quite the nasty buckoff streak while Luciano De Castro and Nick Tetz stepped up for the usual contenders. They’ve endured some bad luck when it comes to matchups and catching teams on the wrong night. But with the bottom seven teams in the league standings all within 2.5 games of each other, we have a feeling Head Coach Colby Yates can get his group to turn things around. If not, they’ll be one of the favorites competing inside South Point next month for the ever-dramatic Ride In Round.
